New recording by Samba Jazz Syndicate - Rusty Burge

The band actually changed its name to Brasilia, but there were some videos posted here a while back of a live concert (Double Rainbow, Triste, etc) when the band was called Samba Jazz Syndicate. The recording features some beautiful Brazilian tunes like Cafe com Pao and Na IIha De Lia, No Barco De Rosa (On Lia's Island, In Rosa's Boat)…and great guitarist Bruno Mangueria. Also, a tune of mine (Fresh Biscuits) which is not Brazilian.

If interested below are links to iTunes and also my sound cloud that has some samples of the cd.
Best, Rusty

Vibraphone Warriors

So I was just thinking...

This weekend Tony is organizing a Virtual Day of Percussion featuring the vibraphone. It sounds like it'll be great, but I think the real success will come from how many extra people we- the vibes community- get to participate. At the World Vibes Congress we talked about how important it is for us to promote this instrument, and the VDOP is a perfect opportunity to do that. Unfortunately I won't catch any of the VDOP because of another event, but I'm doing what I can to spread the word and get people to check it out. Here are some ideas:

Solo Vibraphone Practice - Alone Together (Take Three)

Practicing solo vibraphone on Alone Together. Here is Take 3 out of three takes. This version has more of an emphasis on counterpoint and more active left hand accompaniment techniques.

Other Takes:

Take 1: This is a fairly brief two chorus version that includes right hand octaves along with left hand accompaniment and pedal point in the bridge of the 2nd chorus.

Good Vibes March '14 update

Time

Hi All,
I welcome some new (to me) vibes players in the March show; Gary Shapiro (sorry it took me so long, Gary), Martin Fabricius, Ray Alexander, and Dave Hagedorn. Also, a musician who calls himself Mr. Ho but is in reality Brain O'Neill. Jay Hoggard opens with a soulful gospel tune that I just can't seem to get out of my head, "Worship God in Spirit, Truth and Love." What a beauty!
Jerry Tachoir is back with his new CD Stories, Dan Dean (g) and Tom Collier (v) play a Rolling Stones tune "What A Shame," Rusty Burge with a Monk tune, Hendrik Meurkens with Jobim and lots more.

Solo Vibraphone - Alone Together (Take Two)

Practicing solo vibraphone on Alone Together. Here is Take 2 out of three takes. This rendition is a little slower and starts out with more subtlety than Take 1. In this take, I'm experimenting with using a variety of articulations/note lengths as well as executing lines with four mallets.

Other Takes:

Take 1: This is a fairly brief two chorus version that includes right hand octaves along with left hand accompaniment and pedal point in the bridge of the 2nd chorus.

I learned something totally new today about vibes

At least, it was new to me because I had totally forgotten about it.

First and foremost, thank you to Noel Okimoto. He has recently joined the site and I began corresponding with him about an instrument he has. The subject turned to the music he is involved with, which is Hawaiian music. I kind of remember some of it from back in the 60s on the radio; stuff like Don Ho actually made it on the air where I lived.

I had completely forgotten that it had a lot of vibes on it. Check it out, folks:
