Mike Mainieri Wanderlust 

Track 1 Bullet Train 

Lots of percussion at the opening. Really cool. Tune is super difficult but, as is the case with the entire album, played effortlessly so it doesn’t sound difficult. To me, it sounds like there’s a marimba overdub on the head. Great track.

Track 2 Bamboo 

Some type of acoustic guitar opens the track. Flute and marimba play the head. Mainieri plays a great marimba solo. Another great track.

So What is an A,A,B,A form tune using 2 chords, dm7 and ebm7. Maybe the most famous modal jazz standard. The bass usually plays the head. Soloing involves using the Dorian Modes on D and Eb. Repetition and rhythmic motifs work well. Comping can be done using regular minor 7 voicings, “So What” voicings or stacked 4th.

Gary Burton Alone at Last 

Track 1 Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place 

Keith Jarrett tunes. Fast, smooth runs showing Gary’s impressive technique. 
 

Track 2 Green Mountains/Arise, Her Eyes 

2 Steve Swallow tunes. My favorite track. Pitch bends and lots of mallet dampening in Arise. 
 

Track 3 The Sunset Bell

The only Gary Burton tune on the album. My least favorite track. I’ve lost concentration every listening. That the 1st three tracks are live makes the album even more amazing.
