Real simple. Pick something. Play it and record it listen back and do it over and over for an hour or so.

Record then listen to it. Just keep the cycle going and don't interrupt the cycle.

Real simple real easy. Maybe a head to a tune? maybe a solo? Maybe a written out piece.

Play and record it. Sit and listen to it back immediately and then play and record it again and do this over and over.

Tony recently pointed out a great article about the vibraphone on NPR. That’s something we are all concerned about: to get more people to know about this too uncommon instrument.

For this new post, Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you London based vibraphonist Roger Beaujolais! Here is a video he recorded for the internet music channel "MusFlashTV". What I like in this sample, is the approach of the instrument: at a time basic, complete and concrete.

Frits is one of the cats in Holland. A great player. He's also partners with Nico Vanderplas and they're now making the best vibraphones in the world. That is according to Joe Locke and John Piper. And Frits plays his 'you know what's' off. Check out this video.

If the vibes are half as good as Frits plays, look out.

I went to college and have a degree. However some of the best learning I did was off the street. Listening to musicians teach tunes to each other. That's a true lesson in analysis! Someone on a bandstand teaching a tune to a bass player in a about a minute. That always blew me away and I learned a ton from that.

Here is a pretty extensive discography of Joe Locke recordings. Some are hard to get a hand on, but this will give everyone here a pretty good basis of getting stuff by Joe Locke.
