Tri-chromatic vibe - very strange, a must see
I found this clip on youtube introducing a new vibe design called a tri-chromatic vibraphone. The keyboard layout is radically different from anything I've ever seen. Check it out.

When I first encountered modes I felt a little overwhelmed. I had been working hard to really learn all the major and minor scales and thought that would be all the scales I'd need to learn. But no! I discover there are lots of other scales that are important, if not vital, to playing jazz.
Any ideas for beginners lessons. Tjaco has offered to crank some out and I can do some. I'm also checking out a couple guys that specialize in beginning mallets for some lessons.
If you are a beginner, what would you like to see? I know we need more beginners lessons up here, and so we might as well customize them to you!
Ideas??
Made you look.
The point I wanted to bring up is how do we make a living on this instrument? Who out there has made a living playing the vibes? Or was making a living and then got a 'real' job (as my mother used to say). What are your thoughts?
What are some ideas for graduating percussionists who really want to make a living out of playing jazz?? It is almost graduation time?
Have I brought this up already?
I was just thinking about this, on another post, talking about swinging.
A great musician told me, 'The only people who really know if you're a great player is everyone else but you. It's not your decision to make that'.
I play so often and am just not sure if I played a good solo or not, I try not to be judgemental.... I try. So many times I think I sucked and others including the band thought the opposite. Were they being nice to me? Or am I wrong.
I'm toying around with the idea of doing a TOTM Skype workshop this Saturday. Maybe around noon U.S. EDT?
This would be an experiment. I could handle 3 or 4 people on skype. We could spend an hour working on the tune. Anyone interested?
Just putting feelers out there. Nothing is definite yet. You'd need skype. I'll do video and audio, you don't have to do video on your end.
Well sort of free. I'll give away 2 sets to two people (1 set each) who want to do the following.
I'll be giving away the soft version of the mallets. Great for quiet(er) gigs and practicing.
Do a GOOD report on a living vibe player.
Put up his discography, and get 5 of his latest cds in our amazon section. Gather his important links, youtube vids, tell us something about him. (Don't plagiarize).
I just looked and we're at around 4500 posts. That's if i understand the software correctly. Actually I think it's over 5,000 posts. Man we have come a long way. Thanks to all of us and our love of the instrument and our dedication. I thank you guys for your support of the site.
We must be at about 600 lessons now, I think? Well definitely over 500.
Maybe we should tie in with our partners in the west? I think we could easily pull off an East Coast vibe summit. I could get us a place to play no sweat and get the band. We chip in for food and have a really nice hang.
What do you east coast people think??? I'm just going to need help organizing and setting it up.
Ideas??
Are you guys listening to our next TOTM Fried Bananas?
What tune is it based on?
Who wrote it??
What recordings are you listening to?
Start getting it in your system, it's a good tune.
Let's make this the research page for the tune. See what you can dig up.
