Joe Locke at Dizzy's

Saw Joe Locke last night with Tony and chris dingman was there, also christos was there too!

It was a great show! The thing that I love about every time I see Joe Locke perform is his ability to draw you into his world and make you feel welcome there. He really tells stories well (musically and verbally), from the intro to the ending (and he has really nice endings!), the experience is more then just going to see some music...its really about experiencing the music and the world that joe creates and welcomes us all to become a part of.

Quick Gig Story

Had a nice gig last night and was driving home listening to Billy Pierce and thinking about food. I was coming to a red light slowing down and this guy nailed me in the back. I jumped out of my car and saw him trying to start his car. He was going to split. It would not start and he saw me and jumped out and said he was sorry. His car was totaled.

Big Band with Vibes

Hey Everyone,

I have a gig with a Big Band in May and I have a meeting next week to discuss the repertoire. I was wondering if some of you guys might have some ideas for existing arrangements for Big Band with vibes. Ofcourse I'm thinking of all the Terry Gibbs Dream Band stuff and also Lionel Hampton. I also have a great record of Milt Jackson with the Clayton-Hamilton orchestra(Explosive!)

I was just wondering if any of you would have some more ideas, so I can check some stuff.

Thanks a lot!

TJ

My Conversation with Terry Gibbs

I just got off the phone with Terry Gibbs and we had a GREAT talk. He's such a hip guy.

I thought I'd pass along a compliment. Terry said he loves the site and he especially loves all the knowledgeable vibe players on the site. He said he thought our discussions and comments were very intelligent.

I'd have to agree with that. A lot of you cats are pretty wise!!!

I ordered his book and am excited to read it and maybe discuss it here on the site!

The APAP Convention (Anyone Going to Be There?)

Time

Anyone coming to the APAP convention tonight? I know there are hundreds of groups performing.

This is what I call the grind. Trying to get gigs and things happening at these conventions is crazy. The thing about it is I sat at a table of musicians who have played this convention for years and all said they have never booked a gig through this. This is a HUGE convention. Someone said there's a 20-30 minute wait for the elevators... and I'm playing on the 4th floor.

Get a Gig!

A member of the site here just got his first gig on vibes. I thought I would mention that and mention how important it is to play live. Yes if you haven't done it, the first times are a little scary and might even be a disaster, but this is a huge part of getting better and you need to do it.

Thought maybe we could discuss this a little bit if you guys wanted to. Playing in groups and playing live is a important as practicing, if not more!
