Mike Mainieri in Holland

Ok, guys after all you guys harrassing me about this here it finally is, my blog about Mike Mainieri...

Ok, so the first views of the master where at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. A very nice jazzclub in Amsterdam. He was playing with a dutch trio led by Marnix Busstra(on Guitar) together with Eric van der Westen on Bass and Pieter Bast on Drums. A very good trio, which I had never seen before.
The concert was also the release of the cd they just recorded. They have recorded before in a more electrical setting, but this cd is just acoustic trio with Mike on Vibes.

Mike Mainieri

Hey Everybody,

Marie has been hagging me to blog about the two times a have seen Mike Mainieri play in the last week. But I've been fed up with some really complicated personal stuff... Well actually that has been going on for a year now, but it's really complicated, but anyway the bottom line is I have to move soon and have to put a lot of time into our new house and also I have a pretty good gig coming up in a theater show that I'm preparing fo, some pretty advanced classical stuff(I'll post about that too in a while...)....

What's Coming Up?

Trying to sort some stuff out, but I have some things in mind over the xmas break. I'm finished teaching at school (Univ of the Arts) and have a month off.

I'd like to get on line a lot over the month and hang out with subscribers. Maybe Piper and Saindon and Joe will join me for some? That's in the works. Just have to get my schedule together.

I've asked Patty Franceschy to do some lessons during these meet ups with the stevens grip.
I even asked Harvey Price who just wrote a book of Milt transcriptions to do some mini Milt lessons!

Xmas Tunes

Bah humbug!! You guys are in the holiday spirit! I'm not a holiday guy at all and I'm dreading my Friday gig. We'll be in some guys mansion and we'll be playing tunes and of course someone will want Christmas tunes. some of them are pretty and I like Oscar's version of them. I'll play those, but I'm so not a holiday guy, this week won't be fun for me.

I do like listening to some stuff. Choirs and again Oscar. His Xmas cd is really cool I think. I'm also checking out what you guys are posting and that's fun. I'm just not into playing them myself! Scrooge huh?

Miceli Grip with Mallet 4 Melody

When I started playing with 4 mallets, I had to choose which grip to use. I decided to use the Miceli grip because it seemed like an intuitive transition from using 2 mallets, where the inner mallets (mallets 2 and 3) usually handled the melody and the outer mallets (1 and 4) helped with the harmonies. It seemed to me that if you wanted harmony, it would be above the melody (e.g., a third), with mallet 4. As I understand the Burton grip, the melody is usually played with mallet 4. It didn't seem natural to me so I stuck with the Miceli grip.

You look good to me - Oskar Peterson Trio

Hi!

I just bought a vinyl copy of the album "We get requests" by the Oskar Peterson Trio. I know this record since I was a teenager and for me the solo OP plays here is one of the finest jazz solos ever recorded. OP uses rather few notes, has a perfect phrasing and creates an tremendous "dramatic arc" over the solo and takes it to almost "reliefing" climax. And yet another aspect is the bass by Ray Brown and the drums by Ed Thigpen that faciliate and support the solo so well.
