Its obvious to me that people are signing up each day. The new members chart is constantly changing. Correct me if i am wrong, but i get the feeling that less than 25% of the members actually click on the forums. In other words, we need to get more people on the forums. Some forums have not been posted in for a year. some have no topics at all! In order to make this community better, we need more people on the forums.
Heres my idea
Right when a new member signs up, reroute them to the forums page. There should be a newbie( or beginner) forum at the top, encouraging them to visit. On thevibe.net ( i think thats it, correct me otherwise) There is a whole section labeled : read this first!
We should do the same.
Now whos with me?

Forums are for members

the forums are so members can post. but you're right i wish more members posted in the forums. subscribers have tons of ways of posting and being heard.
you want to write the read me first post. we can post it and then maybe i can put up a box for members saying they can post in the forums. hmmm up top i say forums, maybe i should say MEMBERS AREA. what do you think? something like that?
if i were you, putt it on the homepgae somewhere

make a link saying members here or something. Also, put it more to the left on the bar on the left. Honestly, when i first came, seeing it on the left made me ignore it. Maybe putt a (new) thing under the word forum when theres something new. Like i said, redirect the people who sign up to the forums. send them an email or something. members area makes it seem like a seperate are. Ahhah instead of saying forums undefined when a non member clicks on forums, show them how to sign up! Saying undefined makes them appear invisible

I deeply agree with this cause, I feel like we get a lot of posts going up on this part of this site that take some priority away from the great lessons coming up. Think before just posting a question or something because I bet it would be a lot simpler and responses would be easier to go through in a forum setting.

i always thought of the forums as a place for members to talk to members and subscribers. in fact i thought it was a place for subscribers to talk and to teach members. as well as putting up instruments for sale and talking about other things. i don't spend much time in the forums. i have to really put my time into the subscribers. but i figured the forums could be a good place for all you guys to mingle.
the thing is, to find time to do all this. there are many many things on the site that need organization and finding the time sucks. i'm talking with my partner and mike pinto about some of these things, so hopefully we'll get to tackle some stuff soon.
help?

When this topic first came up, I had a similar reaction. I knew the forums were there, but I didn't (still don't) think of them as something separate from the rest of the activity. My usage pattern is that I go straight to the "Recent Activity" tab and read the latest updates. If I have a comment to make I make it inline. I never notice whether a post comes from the forums or some other section.
When I have something to say about a new topic, I click on "Post" in the left sidebar and chose a suitable category, which is usually "Blog entry" if I'm not doing something specific like adding a video. I rarely (read never so far) feel that my topic is general enough to warrant "Forum topic".
This behavior seems pretty efficient for keeping up with the activity on the site, although I can certainly see how the site can seem overwhelming to newbies. I think that jimmiew has been doing some work to organize things for newcomers. Maybe we need a more obvious pointer to that activity?
