La Fiesta 2015 Piano/vibe duo
aloha and happy Holidays to everyone!!!!!!
this last weekend i had the great pleasure of playing the great Arranger and Pianist Mr. Tommy James. Tommy is a wonderful cat and incredible musician. I you don't know this name or his playing you may have heard him with the duke elliington orchestra, Roy Ayers or you may have heard one of his symphonic arrangements .
I had the chance to record us on this gig in honolulu .. just a Zoom record placed on the floor in between us, then send to a friends studio to mix and sparkle it up.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Xmas (arrangement)
Is it too early for Christmas tunes?
I usually break out my Christmas book around this time of year, but somehow I never get around to really learning some of the better tunes. I thought I would change that this year and try learning a few, playing them in different keys, coming up with interesting changes, etc.
Here's my attempt on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".
Las Vegas Tango - solo vibes (with arrangement)
This very simple tune by Gil Evans sounds great on vibes. Don't overplay on this one. Space is where it's at. See what kind of beautiful textures you can come up with. Be bold and creative! Use your pedaling and mallet dampening techniques.

Orchestrating Melodies using a Root – Chord Pattern in the Left Hand
This semester I have been working with my teacher on playing ballads in the solo style and wanted to share a system/ exercise that I've been using to begin developing orchestration ideas when playing the melody. The following exercise is based on a concept I modified from John Mehegan’s “Jazz Improvisation 4: Contemporary Piano Styles” called “Root – Chord Patterns”.
Tune Learning lesson- Countdown pt1
Hi Vibeworkshoppers!
With the amount of info on the site at this point, I thought it might be helpful to do a series of lessons talking and demonstrating the process I take when learning a tune. Starting from the very beginning and focusing on the process. I'm learning Coltrane's Countdown, but the process applies to whatever tune you want to work on.
