So I was thinking of making some sort of chord etude and I thought, why don't I just comp through a tune. Then if you're working on comping you could learn this etude and analyze it.
So I took the changes to 'I Loves You Porgy' and comped simply through it. I played mostly quarter notes to keep things moving.
I'm curious is this is helpful to any of you.
Tonight, our local jazz station played Henry Mancini's Love Theme From "Romeo And Juliet" (A Time For Us). I thought I would give it a try on vibes. It's in Gm, so I got to work in a different key.

My practice time is inversely proportional to the number of posts per day on this site. So keep it down ;-). I had a nice practice tonight. Some scales, some tunes.
One thing led to another and I started playing Norwegian Wood in 6ths. I think I might add this one to my office's Christmas party cocktail hour gig. Enclosed is an arrangement I came up with. I later heard the original and found I played it in the wrong key (C vs. original E). I think I might keep it in C since it lays nicely.
Work hard on the modes. They are the foundation of the line!!

This is a cool slide show showing some of the instruments in his collection, including a 31-tone vibe where an octave is divided into like, 21 parts. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Richards almost 20 years ago at the PASIC Day of Percussion when it was held in Philly.
I was having fun playing around with parallel 6ths. They sound so cool on the vibes. I tried it on piano and it doesn't sound as nice. Anyway, I started playing a song that I recognized but don't know the name. Can anyone name that tune (attached).
