David talked at the Delaware 2011 workshop about the time when he wanted to work on wide intervals... So he grabbed paper and would just write anything on paper and then play this etude. Just dots, and then he'd make the rhythms on the fly.
Here David talks about solo playing and makes the point about syncopation. Why play the same rhythm with both hands? Play another rhythm with the left hand.
A few years ago, I did a lesson where I talked about minor surround tones. I feel like surround tones are often discussed over dominant and minor, but not major as often. So I decided to talk a little about how to surround chord tones on major chords, enjoy!

An excerpt from David Friedman's Workshop. Here he's talking about common tones.
Hey everyone, To reaffirm my belief in the value of composing alternate melodies, I'd like to offer up a Free CD of mine to the first two people to post an alternate melody to any of the Tunes of the Month that we have gone over on the site! Post a lead sheet and an audio recording of you playing the melody if possible!
Here is the 3rd part of a lesson series on Building a Voicing Vocabulary. This lesson, like the others, is intended to be listened to after having read the PDF which accompanies it.
