Hey everybody,
I got an old set of Deagan keys I want to get tuned. I have used Gilberto in Chicago before, but am now in Montreal, and was wondering is anyone knows anyone in Canada who is capable. I just don't want to have to deal with USA customs, and extra shipping etc.... (I guess this is where I make some negative comment about Trump, but I just don't have the energy)
you can e-mail me direct with recommendations: mnomusic (at) mac (dot) com
thanks
Michael

Hi Michael,
I don't know anyone that does this in Canada and have only worked with people in the USA, namely Bill Youhass.
MD
Bill is retired, but Rick Byers took over the shop and is great!

I am pretty sure Bill is around a lot, but officially, he is retired. Rick is doing great work though and is, at the very least, entirely close to Canada. Yeah, I know, Customs is a hassle. My dad was a Customs Inspector.
Perhaps a Customs brokerage would be an assist that would make the process easier and cheaper. They are experts at such things. Bottom line, you are not really importing or exporting anything, because you are getting back the same thing you will be sending, so you are just hiring the services of an American, which ought to be something that doesn't involve tariffs... I think. Worth a call to a broker because they are the experts.
must be a way around that.

must be a way around that. can't you just say you're bringing it in to get appraised?
Can you make a car trip?

Declare it if they ask, bring it across and get it tuned and bring it back. Years ago I set up a drop-off and tuning and pickup in one day when I was in Chicago. Giberto told me to keep my car comfortable so he didn't have to wait long for the bars to come to temperature. If I did it again I'd put a thermometer in the car and keep it as close to 72 degrees as possible.
Granted I don't know distance, etc, but maybe you can find someone here on VW who can ship the bars back and forth to be tuned near the border as another alternative.

This guy tuned my vibes in just a couple of day, was very good, and inexpensive. ($180 CAD$ for 3 octaves)
His name is Denis Blaise his tel # is 1-514-639-4783.
I'm not sure if he speaks english though, we spoke only in French. Super nice guy.
