Marimba

This is for Barry! Here's a slow mo' of 4 in 1 with a really nice stick drop at the end. (Inside joke for long time, vibesworkshop members).

Maybe this will be of some help with the etude.

I left the sticks after the throw up there for all to examine. You see I can tell the future by how the sticks fall onto the vibes. And I see a lot of good vibe playing in the future for everyone based on that throw.

Practicing tunes in other keys is a great exercise. Recently Tony and I had a short discussion on the benefits of transposing. It reminded me of "Comrade Conrad", a beautiful Bill Evans tune that actually moves up a 5th to a new key every chorus! The transition to a new key is so smooth the listener may not even be aware that the tune is moving through all 12 keys.

To me a very good example of mallets in "popular" but good music... In Greek! Cool huh? And with marimba: even more original, no?

Hey Vibes Workshop,

I was in Berlin for a few days, and had the opportuny to meet again the "Friedman Clan", Charly and Simon.

We played some tunes at the university, duets with marimba and vibes. Unfortunately, we only recorded this one.

That statement goes with me for a few weeks now.
Who are those famous 20?

Man in general tries to break complex concepts into smaller bite size pieces.
Because of time the results and impact of the proposed breakdown is often not apparent.
I think how we have broken down the chromatic scale causes the learning experience to be longer than needed.

The result of the current system is an overly complex language which impedes reaching the goal(to be able to improvise) more than it should.(I'm not saying it doesn't work.)

I have a challenge for you if you’re game for it.

It’s developing the “Anything But That” method.

I'd love to hear what other people do when they rehearse their bands. I'd especially like to hear about rehearsals with Frank Zappa (if anyone at VW has any experience with that). I heard he rehearsed a lot. I'd also like to hear about rehearsals with "local" bands and rehearsals that David Friedman, Gary Burton and Tony conduct when traveling, and anyone who is doing "professional" rehearsals who is paying their members for their time.

I'm starting to get back into playing a little and thought I'd share some of the exercises as I revisit them. Today I was reviewing harmonizing in sixes and thought I'd share one.

I was doing a gig yesterday with some students from a "conservatoire" in Paris, we were playing at the auditorium of the conservatoire...
