Anyone know about the scene in New York? I'm planning on going there either this summer or fall. I'm not going to be in a university. I was just wondering about the logistics of it. You know, I'm either going to have to get a ground floor apartment, find an apartment with a big enough elevator, or find a storage place outside my apartment (I'm really clueless here). Or am I just tripping over nothing here? I think I've decided on using zipcar for transportation cuz I live in Fresno, CA and I'm not too big on driving my old van across the country, then pay for parking once I'm there. Anyone got some tips let me know. I'm all ears.

let's see if they come online and talk to you. if not i'll give you numbers.

what instrument do you have? if it's an m-55, then get cases and a rock and roller and then get a pad with an elevator and you're all set.

Ahh, not easy... I always had a car. A lot of work parking it on the streets. Can't imagine how you do it otherwise, but they never had those Zipcars then. Just don't expect to make enough on the gig to rent the car...

Hey Daniel, I've been living in NY for about 3 years now. Originally, I moved up and went to grad school at Purchase (about 35 minutes from the city). I didn't want to live on campus, so I moved to Yonkers. It is right next to the Bronx and 15 minutes from Manhattan. Even though I've been finished school, I still live in Yonkers. The thing that I like about it is that I have had no problems with my car in Yonkers and I just drive into the city. Most of my gigs are after 7 and 8 at night, so parking is easy. Sometimes, I do gigs that start earlier, but those are usually gigs that pay well, (private parties, etc.), so I just bite the bullet and spend $40 on parking. That isn't even that bad when you start to notice how much people spend on cabs! Most people that I meet in NY that don't have a car in NY wish they did. Trying to do cabs and subways all the time sucks. I've tried it, it'll never work with vibes. The car thing isn't that bad once you get used to it. You start to learn areas, and where you can and can't park. Now I have it down to the point where the only time I ever pay to park my car is during the week in the day in Midtown. Getting used to the car does kind of suck, but ask anyone, getting around is a pain in the ass no matter what! Also, some clubs like Smalls and Fat Cat have vibes, so that's really awesome, you can use the subway on those kind of gigs. If you have anymore questions, I can help you, you can leave a message at my website. It took me years to figure all this crap out, and I learned it through time and a bunch of mistakes unfortunately! Anyway, I hope this helps.

You might want to try Zip Car for a while. I got rid of my car over a year ago and started using Zip Car. It worked out to be cheaper for me and don't have to worry about street cleaning, tickets, theft, break down, car shop, etc. You just need to figure out which cars you can fit the vibes in. That's all of them, except the ones without foldable back seats.
