Dear mallets player, thank you! You will not regret ...
We are working to integrate several new features in addition to those already existing.
And what would you like to find in an app like this?
Thank you for your feedback.

I find the way the voicings are laid out pretty unsystematic and unintuitive. "Disposition" doesn't really tell you anything about how the voicing is constructed or how it relates to other voicings. The layout seems more like a dictionary, as other people have said. But while a dictionary will tell you what a word means and how it's spelled, it won't tell you how to use it in a sentence well.
Anyone else using this?

I stopped using this for a while for the above mentioned reasons, but started fiddling with it as I'm away for the holidays and not with my vibraphone. I noticed there is a new update with a feature called 'Rotator'. I could not for the life of me figure out what this was supposed to be for. It allows you to scroll through different voicings in sequence, but I can't figure out how to edit and put it to good use. Any insight from the developer? Is he still around here?

just so everyone knows. i'd say this is an app for real beginners at this point. i hope frances really develops it.

I just bought the app. I don't see anywhere near $8.99 of value here. This stuff is all available on any chord voicing web tool for free. I'm not a happy camper. I develop apps for a living and I think I know what $8.99 should bring me in value....
yeah i thought the same

yeah i thought the same thing. he says he's going to be adding to it. but i think as it is it's not very valuable at all.
so you write apps for a living? i'd love to talk to you sometime.
Thank you Scradley :-)

First of all thanks for your purchase. I know that on the net you can find a lot of information, almost all free. The Mallets Voice is convenient because you can carry with you ...using small devices such as iPhone, iPod or iPad, without necessarily having an internet connection. You can use it directly in your practice room or at school with students. There is nothing like it before The Mallets Voice. To continue I want to inform you: there will be new features and you will soon get the new version. Finally, what you'd find in an application like this? We like to know your opinion to develop the application satisfying the needs of the user. Thanks for feedback!

we'll see. hopefully you'll add more features. i think it is priced way too high for what it is. and i was also dissapointed. and i don't want to lead any vibe players on.
but i promise, if you're adding features and if it is a great app, i will recommend it. but the voicings have to change. you show a 6/9 voicing and what ever key you're in you just transpose the voicing. who needs an app for that? how about showing the voicings and how they would change up high or down low. etc.
how about putting in chords and you show smooth voicings and they change. so they're generated on the spot. that's cool. something like what the ireal book does.
but just showing a maj 7 voicing and then you simply transpose it around the instrument is not cool.
how about rootless voicings? how about you play the voicing and we have to find the notes. that's a much better way to learn voicings.
and finally, let's not use the site to make a big commercial for the app. but we can talk about it. that's fine. if it's a big commercial, then the site needs some $$. it's very expensive to run this. ha ha just like it's very expensive and hard to make an iphone app!
here's to hoping that you make a great app!
Oooook ;-)

I tend to agree... I think an app like this should add something that is not really out there especially for the price. Just straight up voicings are available anywhere for free. I also like Tony's idea of making it more of an aural learning than just showing the voicing. Maybe integrate comping styles. ie. copming in medium swing/up/bossas/waltzes/sambas/etc. Also the voice leading thing is really important. That should be included somewhere in an app specifically on voicings IMHO. Maybe put something in there about how playing voicings should still involve melody.
Thank you Drew!

mallet app
Babu Sat, 01/05/2013 - 08:40
Something strange : the right mallets are Burton grip, the left one are classical grip. And since this app till now is for beginners, it may be confusing....
I'm seeing doubtfully this kind of app. It remains me the same things with guitar : lot of dictionary books or apps for guitar chords on the market, all finally useless when playing in real situation (rehersal with others musicians, or in front of an audience, or in record session). The best (and only valid, as my personal experience tells me) tool is to know (best than your name, or anything else) how to build chords and voicings and deal with them without any help, because you just can't stop the playing band saying "oh, wait a minute, I need to search in my book for this chord"... What counts is what you've really assimilated from your home work. Putting a lot of hours on learning, figuring by yourself the voicings and practicing them, will finally save a lot of your time, and for a better result. If you rely on a chord dictionary or app, the voicing you need on the spot will always missing ! (as I learned on the beginning of my career).
Sorry, I may be sounding very negative, but I saw so many people waisting their time instead of really do the necessary personnal work... Figuring voicings is not rocket science, everyone can do it by himself...
I would add I'm a big fan of your vibes playing (I've posted here your fantastic Caravan version).
My 2 cents
I think the same... with little adds...

Thank you Babu for your post!
We will work on the app to offer a support to know the best (for me, yes) voicings to play on vibes.
Three octaves combinations are less like piano keyboard or gt.
The way is practice, live practice, of course.
I suggest to listen and transcribe... lots of hours, yes!
This app helps to find a start point... then the most important work may starts from the musician who use it.
Like when we are at a Masterclass: do we listen and look voicings from our's heroes? Yes I do... so may be other palyers do it...
Ok this voicings are my favorite from Gary Burton, David Friedmann, Mike Mainieri and others...
I hope you like the 1st update... coming soon!

Now, if an app showed a tune with different masters's voicings, it will be another story !
All the things's voicings à la Gary Burton or David Friedman or Mike Mainieri will be a substantial gain of time. Transcribing is essential but time eater, and it's fine to pay for this work.
What I don't like much is letting believe the beginners that figuring voicings is too complicated for them and an app will solve for them the so-called problem. THat enhance their lazy side, but nobody can avoid to "jump in the fight"...and the sooner, the better.
I know a lot of people owning tons of books, apps, gear, learning CDs, etc... (all what the music business can provide), but totally unable to play something decent, even simple.
Anyway, I wish you good luck with this app !
exactly :-)

Wao! You are great!
It 's really hard to make the Blues without missing notes ...
Gary played notes spontaneously and, in my opinion, is inimitable, unique and absolutely the best in this kind of music!
What I think is that it's nice to know his style and his voicings.
Then I would recommend each individual to develop his own style :-)
There are online many videos with transcripts much more difficult than this: for example, Oscar Peterson ... It 'obvious that we can not play them in the same way!!! Too difficult... Thousands of notes... so fast!
But there are those who manage to get so close to the original style ... Congratulations!
FP
thanks
