Anyone have any suggestions for a mallet that I can use to bend notes that isn't a plastic xylophone mallet? I'd love to be able to incorporate some of that stuff into my solo playing without having to hold a xylophone mallet the entire time.

I think you need the hard unwrapped mallet to make this work. I think you will find that it's fun for a while
