Upper Structure Triads - First 8 bars of "Autumn Leaves"
Upper Structure Triads (USTs) is one of the chapters that will be addressed in Volume Two of The Complete Guide To Improvisation. Here is an example that illustrates the use of USTs on the first 8 measures of "Autumn Leaves".
The pedal for the most part can be down for two beats at a time for most of the tune. However there are a couple spots where the chords change on beats 3 and 4. Use a lead sheet and your ears to figure out where they are.
Study the original harmony and see where I add upper partials not in the lead sheet.
Even if the harmony is too complex this also for beginners, just work on the music, don't worry about the advanced chords. Just play it as is.

I've been recently working on a solo version of Bobby Hutcherson't "Little B's Poem". It's a 16 bar tune with no bridge. The form is simple but getting the feeling of the tune plus feeling good about the time and the groove have taken me quite a long time. Although I've been "dabbling" in the tune for years I feel I'm finally kind of getting it down. It's a killer. Questions like, "What should I play in the left hand?" "Should I play every change?" "Sould I comp during the solo or just play lines?" Lots of things to consider.
