Here are some beautifully improvised choruses by Gary which were recorded during a 1985 clinic in Argentina. Gary was talking about improvising with motives. Gustavo had this tape of the clinic and transcribed the choruses from the clinic.

Finishing up this long series using 6 note scales with an intervallic idea.

But they are super important. If you know your guide tones then you understand how the harmony works. If you can improvise guide tones, then you can make up accompaniment parts behind a singer. You can make up other parts with other musicians quickly. Guide tones are important!
