Chord Study Based On My One And Only Love (For Tarik)

Ok the title looks weird. It's not for Tarik because he's 'My One and only Love', it's just that he posted his version of the tune so I thought I'd crank out a chord study based on the tune! We got that straight right?

What I would do would be fill in chords and then learn the tune and check out the voicings.

I decided not to post an audio version (midi) of the etude because I think it's pretty straight forward and maybe it's better that you solve the puzzle and get the sounds happening by learning the etude.

TOTM - The Art of Solo Vibes - Pat Metheny tune by Ted Wolff

This tune by Pat Metheny is titled Letter from Home and was featured on a CD of the same name that Pat put out in the 1990s.

The left hand accompaniment is mostly single line arpeggios which provide rhythmic movement and keep the piece flowing. The right hand uses octaves occasionally, which really sound good on vibes.

Rootless

Here's an interesting study. Print this etude out and learn it. At some point you should realize what tune it is.

Then realize that there are no roots in the chords except at the beginning and at one spot where I added it by mistake. Hopefully this should give you some insight into some of the things we've been talking about. That is playing chords without the roots and using the upper extensions to make the harmony.

TOTM - Rhythm Changes - Straight Ahead

http://www.amazon.com/Straight-Gelder-Edition-Digital-Remaster/dp/B000T…

Your assignment is to learn this tune. What's cool about it is it's rhythm changes in Ab. The other cool thing are the players. They're monsters.

The melody is simple! maybe 5 notes total! But the rhythms are hard! That is hard to make them swing. So that's your assignment. Play the melody with the metronome, etc.
