I posted this to the jazzharmonica.org website that I frequent

I know…what’s this got to do with chromatic?
6 Day Workshop At the University of Delaware, Dave Samuels, Tony Miceli, Behn Gillece, Christos Rafalides, Mario DeCiuttiis ofAlternate Mode ( MALLaKAT), Mathias Goebel and Randy Sutin, Your Own Instrument and Practice Room!
In high school I saw Milt Jackson and MJQ on a snowy winter nite in Concord, NH and i fell in love with the sound, not having good rhythm as a kids I never persuade that love. A couple of months ago I ordered one, so off to a vibraphone workshop I went!

It is a joint venture of The University of Delaware’s percussion department (Harvey Price) & The Vibes Workshop (Tony Miceli).

I’m 60, always wanted to go to music school but never put in the work that that takes, so this was a trip to music school for me, a Skip Barber Racing School kind of thing,. Wow, did I have fun! 13 people in all showed, everybody got a vibraphone to play, there were Musser, Adams & Yamaha instruments to try and the new Malletech showed up for a day so Christos Rafalides (a Malletech artist) could demonstrate his incredible technique.

What did I learn, well, that jazz deserves RESPECT! Respect for traditional forms, melody & rhythm! Rhythm, First – TIME, Rhythm, Rhythm, Rhythm! Time is everything…if it don’t swing…forget about it ! Second, learn your instrument & play with other people or at least a backing track so you learn to listen, do the work & when you think it boring ask yourself why, maybe what’s boring is your approach?

All of the artists that came were very informative & helpful, no ego trips, Harvey Price went out of his way for the beginners, helping with grips and mallet attack. Lots of Harmony & technical stuff from Tony Miceli, the phase “you dig it?” means that there’s a gem at you feet that your missin’.

I’ve got a whole new outlook on music, be it with whatever instrument, a workshop like this is a great adventure. Tony Miceli’s Vibraphone Workshop has energized my musical horizons, thanks!
