Forum Topic: Steve Jobs 1955-2011

By now I'm sure everyone has heard about the passing of Steve Jobs at the age of 56. A few thoughts: I don't have an iPad. I don't even have a MaxiPad. I'm a confirmed PC user, I don't have an iPod, an iPhone or an iChing. However, that being said, I do use iTunes, and it was, and is, a revolutionary way to listen to music, and add to your music library. If this was the only thing Steve Jobs developed, he would still be remembered as an innovator who really changed the way we communicate, acquire information and in that, enable us to further enrich our lives.

Forum Topic: Vibes Album Covers

Hi Vibes Lovers!

Sometimes when I'm looking for vibes albums I find that, altough the instrument is not very popular, or perhaps because of it, the vibraphone has especial atractive for the cover image. Bars, mallets, ressonators, frame, etc. are often protagonists of the picture, or ilustration. Sometimes is very artistic point of view, sometimes funny and sometimes just freak, but, even tough the important is the music wich is inside, I find amazing some covers!

Forum Topic: Question to the tech guys here - what microphones to buy?

i just want to buy a new set of microphones. i already got 2 small condenser´s for vibes or drum overhead the akb2000b which sound good so far. but i´m thinking about to buy a set of rode nt5 also small condenser. on the other hand i heared by various people (like randy from the site) he records vibes with 2 large capsule condensers like the rode nt1. i already got one rode n1 but the old modell. but since they are cheap like 180€ per micro i´m thinking about buying 2 of them.

Forum Topic: Finale notation detail

I'm writing out variations on a Japanese Folk song for a student with Finale PrintMusic 2010. Problem: the notes I enter via midi appear in the treble staff only (of the double piano staff), while I'd like to split/divide the notes between bass- & treble staff in a way to show what's supposed to be played with the left & right hand (bass clef for left, treble for right).
I'm aware of the possibility of splitting through Hyperscribe, but that would only split at a certain point...

Forum Topic: Problem with Audio only Lessons

Hi all! I have been a registered user for a while, but I just recently got on the subscription thing to get access to the lessons--finally have a little more time to practice; also my own vibes and practice space. (hurray!)

My question is this; every time I try to listen to an audio only lesson, it ends up only going 1/3 to 1/4 of the way through. For instance, If the audio is supposed to be 14 minutes, it usually only goes for around 3 minutes. Video seems to work fine. I am running on OSX with Firefox as a browser. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any help!

Forum Topic: Musser M235 Mallets

Hello to all the users here at Vibesworkshop. This is my first post here and I´m a bit ashamed to say that I´m asking for help instead of offering sage advice on all things VIBES. I have a bit of a problem with my mallets. I use an older pair of Good Vibes M 235 Medium Hard Mallets (the old Gary Burton signature model)which I love and give me a great tone and response from my vibraphone. The beaters are ragged and dirty but still completely intact, but the handles are twisted and bent and under normal use maybe don´t have so much time left.

Forum Topic: Does anyone else think of the vibe as a "falsetto" voice?

I struggle daily with issues involving music and many of them are just typical mid-life things but one of them is that I realized late into my musical life that the vibraphone has a "falsetto-sounding" voice to me. Not only the physical range of the instrument but it's sound seems "falsetto" to me. If I were to choose another instrument, I'd pick one that has a range in the natural male voice range. Anyone else ever thought of that? Yeah... I know.. I think too much. But the vibe just sounds so...falsetto.
