Amos, Try and memorize the chords on the sheet music. Think about the fact that where those notes are and however they are mixed up, as long as the bass player plays the bass note, it is that chord. Do you get it?

She's totally bad ass! I love her left hand and the independence. I think this might be where the next 4 mallet giant comes from. maybe the vibes are neither a piano or guitar but instead a Gyil!!!

I do think vibesworkshop has turned into a gold mine of information. I can say that, because I don't get all the credit. If I would have made this a site where just I was the teacher, it would have never grown into what it is. Off the…

Back at Berklee today for registration. Happy to get back to the college after a nice break during my sabbatical. Got in early since traffic into town was a breeze and had a little time to shed on a Marimba One. This is an “on the fly” run…

This wonderful, quirky tune by Earl Zindars has been a favorite of mine for over 50 years. I used to jam on this tune in the 70's and perform it with bassist Harvie S. Although I'd been playing it off and on I never was satisfied with my…

Bach Minuet in C Minor by J. S. Bach – practicing this classical piece for the purpose of dampening. These kinds of pieces are quite easy on the piano but definitely pose a challenge for the vibist in trying to maintain clarity of the…

I first heard of Manu Dibango when AM radio was playing his hit "Soul Makossa" around 1974, and I knew of him as an Afrobeat singer and sax player. I had no idea he played mallets until I saw a video concert around 1999 on the BET on Jazz…

He said play an Ab dominant bebop scale over a Cmin7b5. It's interesting because a C-7b5 looks like a rootless Ab9 chord. So I thought I'd pass it along here. I'm sure he has covered it in lessons, but I thought I would mention it.

*Ballads - Energy and Motion Translation for Chinese students

One of my favorite songs - "Young and Foolish". My student and I were working on this for solo vibraphone playing and voicings. Here's a little sample of what we were working on. Fun stuff.

This is an arrangement of "Someone to Watch Over Me" that I have been working on for the last few weeks. It's inspired by the Keith Jarrett solo version from "The Melody at Night, With You." I always find my arranging ability outpaces my…
