Beginner

Hi folks.

Trying to get back into a groove with practicing after a crazy schedule upon my return from the workshop, which was beyond excellent in every way (meeting new friends, learning, sharing, fun!)

Not to bore you to death - this is for my own accountability. I have (or will) add minor and dom 7ths to this. Running through the cycle as Tony encouraged us to do during the workshop. It's a great concentration type exercise too.

Of note is how much noise this old M55 makes with each beat. Ugh.

This afternoon I wanted to get into this chord guide you did Tony, posted here:

I printed and proceeded to try and put it to memory while integrating the melody, which I hadn't memorized either until now. :) Hopefully it'll stick.

So I said I'd start to be accountable and post video of things I"m working on. This is a start. Starting reading through this yesterday. Harder than it looked! So many nuances with time, phrasing, pedaling, etc. So, a work in progress! I did analyze it as Tony recommended. Posted an image of the page here too.

If you know the changes to Miss Jones and know the melody, here's a simple melodic solo to transcribe.

You can hear the tune in the solo, right? You hear the harmony right? And I'm playing so little to make this work. Can you do a version of this?

Looking forward to being in Aruba next week to perform in two concerts as well as present a masterclass on jazz improvisation. Thanks to Carlos Bislip for inviting me to headline the jazz festival and give the masterclass. Carlos has assembled a talented group of students who will be playing with me. It’s been a pleasure coaching them the past month via Skype. We’ll be playing some classic standards including “It Could Happen To You” which I’m playing here in this brief clip.
