How to Play Vibes like Oscar Peterson Part II - Rolls, Pedals, and Bouncy Block Chords

Hello everyone!

I’m going to be posting two lessons a week for a little bit, so I hope you like piano-isms! This one’s actually a Part II to my original one on Oscar Peterson. It delves into a few more idiosyncrasies characteristic to his playing.

I mentioned a few recordings in this video, so I’ll link to youtube versions here:

How to Play Vibes like McCoy Tyner - Fourths, Modes, and Quartal Structures

Hello everyone,

This is my fourth "How to Play Vibes Like" lesson. And I should be doing 8 more this coming month, so if anyone has any suggested pianists to cover, let me know. So far, I plan on having George Shearing, Benny Green, Count Basie, Monk, and a second part to my Oscar Peterson lesson.

I'm hoping everything I talked about in this lesson made sense. It can be tricky stuff, so please ask questions if you don't understand something. And listen to his music, specifically "Passion Dance" and "Blues on the Corner" to hear these concepts in action.

Thanks!

Dave Samuels' favourite chords: the Constant Structure trick -V

Dave is one of my hero and I was lucky enough to study with him during high school. He used to come every year in Italy and doing summer camps where I learned a ton about his way of playing.

A path to solo playing 3

Using "Like someone in love" (Eb) to study solo-vibe playing. Having started with creating a counter line to the melody with the root notes of the accompanying chords we are now starting to incorporate chords. See the previous installments (a path to solo playing 1 and 2) for the lead sheet. More detailed and in-depth study? Contact me for a Skype or Zoom lesson.
