Yes, Red Norvo was an awesome player. He seemed to continue to grow musically throughout his career. In fact, I think he was a big influence to Gary Burton (a great video of Gary, Red, Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes on YouTube.Com).
I had the pleasure of going to Red's house in LA and visiting with him before he died. I was tagging along with Bill Molenhof at the time(another great player/composer we should be spending some time learning and talking about). It was a great and rewarding experience.
Red Norvo was raised in Beardstown, Il. and loved talking about his birthplace and missed eating catfish from his home town along the Mississippi River. His later playing was often done with excellent four mallet playing with Tal Farlow. I think he was a very important force in getting the ball rolling on four-mallet damping and pedaling. That's just the way it sounds to me when going through a lot of recordings throughout vibe history. Really wonderful person as well as a great player.

Decatur is were jencos were made. Maybe someone went to beardstown, discovered jazz vibes, and brought it to some of his buisness friends and made a business known as jenco. I may be wrong, but jenco was not far at all from beardstown
I grew up in Springfield, Il. and Bill Molenhof grew up in Bellville, Illinois. Decatur is just a hop skip and a jump from Spfld. I'm not sure how the jenco manufacturing happened or when it did. I'm pretty sure that Red was one of the first vibe players... (maybe before Hamp.)not sure though. My history is not that good.
