Just kind of went off on some ideas I have :-)
So here is an epic etude with a lot of what i'm talking about in the videos.
Your job:
Write in the changes with my extensions.
Listen and adjust your pedaling so it sounds like my playing.
This is a great exercise for all levels, but very good for beginning level players!
My student Pablo from Univ of South Mississippi and I came up with a cool version of an Open Closed Exercise.
It's a way to work on Open and Closed voicings and to work on 2 5 1's at the same time.

This is a great exercise to help you really start thinking about comping through the scales.
It's the A section to Little Sunflower harmonized in block chords.
It's easy and if you know the tune you'll easily play it in D minor.
Keep it around and whenever you want do the exercise HOWEVER do it different keys. This will really help your comping as you will start moving the chords up and down the keys.
Read the pdf for all the information. Using licks to learn vocabulary and to practice moving harmony around in different keys is great! Take all your licks and move them around!
Find variations of them as well. Then you won't be a copy and paste player. You'll understand vocabulary and harmony and harmonic sound.
