Practice Tapes: April in Paris

Here's another one guys... A better recording, too. I was working on a thing with this tune to do the first time thru kind of rubato, with the motor off. Then I kick on the vibrato, and go into a weird meter (mostly 5/4 ish) feel.. the challenge for me when playing solo is to try and keep it interesting. Also, I love Ella's version of this tune. Totally different feel (& key). Pure swing. I actually like it so much I wanted to stay far away from that!

Practice Tapes: Days of Wine and Roses by BarryK 110122

To help me learn Days of Wine and Roses, I have been practicing on piano, as well as vibes. This weekend I was hoping to create a piano backing track and did some recording. Kept getting interrupted, as you will hear. LOL.

I am not satisfied with the quality of recording the piano. It sounds distant. I am using good mics (tried AKG C 1000 S, and the AMT 404) and a good Mackie mixer. Can't get it right. Any tips would be appreciated.

Fair warning -- this is a major geek-out. I'll forgive anyone who doesn't want to slog through it, and I don't expect many comments.

But, I'll go ahead. As often comes up in comments to posts here, this is a freakin' fantastic site. Most recently this comment has come up in response to the video of David playing "Giant Steps", but the awesomeness has many dimensions, including the contributions of the star players, the working pros, the students and the people just trying to make the best music they can.

Forum Topic: Kat-pad training

I have a malletKAT 2 octave Express 6.1, and a 1 octave expander, purchased at different times. The expander is louder, and the top octave of the Express is even softer than it's !st octave. How do I get them in balance? I have followed the instructions on pgs. 54 thru 57 and it doesn't work.

Thanks-ELK
