So What is an A,A,B,A form tune using 2 chords, dm7 and ebm7. Maybe the most famous modal jazz standard. The bass usually plays the head. Soloing involves using the Dorian Modes on D and Eb. Repetition and rhythmic motifs work well. Comping can be done using regular minor 7 voicings, “So What” voicings or stacked 4th.
‘I can link a video where I’m playing Miles’ solo as well if needed.
Gary Burton Alone at Last
Track 1 Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place
Keith Jarrett tunes. Fast, smooth runs showing Gary’s impressive technique.
Track 2 Green Mountains/Arise, Her Eyes
2 Steve Swallow tunes. My favorite track. Pitch bends and lots of mallet dampening in Arise.
Track 3 The Sunset Bell
The only Gary Burton tune on the album. My least favorite track. I’ve lost concentration every listening. That the 1st three tracks are live makes the album even more amazing.
Track 4 Hand Bags and Glad Rags
Wildflower Study Pt. 4
Modes with starting notes D, A, Gb and B.
Wildflower Study Pt. 3
This is an arrangement I did of Ellington's "I Got it Bad". The pianist is a political science professor I met recently, Peter Minowitz.
