A Serious Look at Recording the Vibes

I've been talking with Randy Sutin about recording the vibes. Randy has hooked up with a great recording engineer here in the philly area. He's going to do an in depth look at different ways of recording the vibes. It looks like we're going to video it and he's going to really prepare something great.

Yah Randy!!! This will really be valuable and cool for subscribers to check out. Maybe Randy will comment here and tell us a little about Dahoud.

Life's Blessing Etude

We've been studying Ed Saindons tune 'Life's Blessing' for a few weeks now. Here's a simple chord melody arrangement of the tune to check out. (It's attached below)

I've left it very simple, you can add some rhythm where needed as well as listen to the other versions on the site and get ideas.

For me a tune like this is a study in chord voicings. This is a very un-standard (meaning not like a Gershwin tune) tune. Only a couple ii Vs, the harmony moving in other ways. So it's a chance to work on chord voicings in a slightly different setting.

Rudresh Mahanthappa

I was listening to the tune Baladhi. When the guitar takes a solo Rudresh accompanies him. It was really cool. I learn alot from things like that. Because I think sometimes, ok that's my left hand and i can see how simply i can accompany myself.

I want everything as simple as i can get it. I don't always do that, but that's what's in my head.

If you haven't checked out Rudresh, you should take a moment. It's pretty crazy and very interesting music with an Indian influence. Deep sh*&.

Libertango Arrangement for vibes and marimba duo

Hi

Just thought I'd share an arrangement I did for a college percussion major student last year.

Its Piazolla's Libertango which many vibes workshop members have expressed a liking of his music so I thought I'd share this.

Its for 5 octave marimba and vibes. Please let me know what you think on davekemp@tpg.com.au

Cheers,
Dave Kemp
