Understanding Tritone Substitutions
by John Mark Piper
To understand the basics of tritone substitutions and how they typically function is an important aspect of music. Having good command of them can help a musician's reading, hearing, performing and memorizing music.
I usually rig something up for Halloween. This year I decided to put an inflatable halloween decoration under a pile of leaves. When the kids come to the door for trick-or-treating, I'll turn on the blower with a remote controlled outlet switch and have it pop up out of the leaves.
Attached is a video of my setup with an overdub of me playing theme music on vibes. I tried doing some dampening. I had trouble with my Piper (43R) mallets as they bounced when I tried dampening so I used Mike Balter 12Rs instead. Any suggestions on controlling the bouncing when dampening.
Here's a suggestion for subscribers using the site and practicing like there is no tomorrow(like you're all doing!).
Say you are working on something, a tune, a progression, a mode or anything like that. The thing to do is to use the search box located to the top left of the page.
Just type in what you are working on (or part of it if you don't get a result) and you'll see posts that relate to what you are working on.
So what if you don't find anything??
Help me name tunes or parts of tunes that are Dorian in sound.
Ha ha, I got the first one. 'So What'.
Oh, here's another. The first to chords of Recordame.
Add on to this list please!
I have a series on modes inside the subscription part of the site. One of the subscribers asked for names of tunes in different modes. So I thought I'd ask all you guys.
So Phrygian, name some tunes that are Phrygian. You can also name sections of tunes that are Phrygian.
Joe takes a strange progression and resolved it because of the melody!
How about as an exercise, one of the subscribers transcribe the progression!
The phrygian scale is pretty cool because it has a minor 2nd between the root and the second scale degree. That gives it a very exotic sound!
Chinese translation for Chinese student.
Dbmajor
你可以聽到這樣的聲響在很多中東音樂、猶太音樂中等。
演奏大調音階跟Phrygian音階,比較看看。
通常在小調中會用到Phrygian,但是跟Dorian, Aeolian比,Phrygian最少用到。
