I had a gig in April at a local jazz club and the promoter of the club asked for me if I could get a pianist for a vibes/duo concert. He also wanted to know if we could do some Gary and Chick songs which was great. We did Desert Air, Crystal Silence, Windows and few others. Here's one of my favorite Steve Swallow tunes called I'm Your Pal which Gary and Chick recorded for the Crystal Silence album. Still one of my most favorite recordings. I remember working on all of these songs when I was a student of Gary's at Berklee.

Here's a whole section on scales. Very complete! Between Behn and myself it has lots of ideas and explanations to you help with chords and scales and improvising!

Great standard written in 1947 with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and music by Jule Styne. Many great versions of this song by vocalists and instrumentalists. Two of my favorite are from Chet Baker and Keith Jarrett.

I posted a lesson recently where I posted the voicings and you guys supply the rhythms. Here is an etude of my rhythms and chords.

You put the chords in. It will help you memorize them. Note the upper partials and add them in as well. Play the etude!

I was jamming with some guys last night & "What Is This Thing Called Love?" was called. I had learned the tune a few years ago but didn't really remember it, & kinda picked it back up as we went along. Looking at it again briefly today I decided to try to use my ears rather than charts to clean it up again. Here's a rough recording from that process. Also posting before I'd call it ready because waiting until they're perfect tends to result in me never posting. :P

Pure Imagination from Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. One of my favorite songs. One of my favorite versions is from Joe with beautiful singing by Kenny Washington. Please check that out if you haven't heard that yet.

Here's a two chorus line etude on Minority. Take notice of some of the diatonic phrases in the beginning. Remember that even simple ideas can really outline the chord if you end on 3rds and 7ths in the right way!

I just started improvising on one of my favorites; Up Jumped Spring, by F.H. Can you guess who that is?
If not you'll have to do minimal research! :-) I thought it would be a nice change to start the melody in the bass.
