In this exercise, the line is a little closer to a walking bass line with quarter notes. Keep the notes legato, and shoot for keeping the pedal down as much as possible with clean dampening in between the notes. Check out the attached PDF!
Hi everyone!
I'm doing a short series on dampening. In these etudes, we're using walking bass lines as a way to work on dampening. Most of these exercises are pretty simple, and a lot of fun! Try them out and see how well you can keep a legato feel throughout. And of course, check out the attached PDF! 😀
You should be able to do this. If you can't then just practice it! Don't worry about why.
You should be able to do this.Â
Watch great players and if they do something you can't do, like a warm up or they're standing in the corner with there sax and they play something. You should be able to do it. If they say well I did this when I was young, then you should be able to do it also. Don't worry about why, just do it. The why will come later.Â
Ok, this is a little artsie fartsie as they say, but it might be helpful. What do you think?Â
These are my videos for lesson 1 of the 15 lesson vibe course. I'm also attaching my Listening Assignment notes here.
Alone at Last Track by Track
Moon-child/ In Your Quiet Place
Firstly, I don’t think this piece could have been named any differently. It just emits such a soundscape energy, and so far its my favorite from the album. There’s so many bold decisions compositionally as well.
Green Mountains/ Arise Her Eyes
A good chord and solo study. I was focusing on chromatic stuff in the chords and the solo.
A great tool for practicing hard lines.
Here is a ii V I exercise that goes through all of the keys. It starts with ii = Cm9, V = F7, I = BbMaj9. Then, the next cycle takes the I to minor: Bbm9, Eb7, Abmaj9, etc.
Attached are an MP3 generated by MuseScore 4, and corresponding PDF.
I probably picked up the melody somewhere but don't know the original source. If you recognize it, please let me know.
I am able to play it on piano, and am working on the vibes now. I'll post that when I get it.
BTW, what's the difference between an Etude and Exercise?
Enjoy,
Barry
