Tony, I think I understood the process of "the escaping mallet" (could be a novel title, no ?).
In fact it's the authentic signature of a true and natural stick drop!
And a real stick drop is when, on the spot, you cannot play one more note.
Then, we have an easy tool to know how long we should practise : till a stick drop happens :o)
Now I know that, i'm looking at my mallets more respectfully, even with some little fear... ;-)

i have broken a mallet before (well more than one) because it pissed me off so much. i would stomp on the mallet on the floor like a little baby!!!
