Here’s my take on ed’s tune “lifes blessing”
In my mind this piece has so many beautiful sections I really ended up mixing up sections to give me what I was going for – which was more of a “church” feeling – looping for example a line cliche idea that turns around using the C/G – D/F# cadence of mm14-15 for a solo/vamp section.
I also liked extending and looping mm 26 – 27 idea to give the ends more push, throwing a Ab maj7#11 substitute for the A-/G on the last times.
I start the piece in 3 and use the 2/5 at mm18/19 to get into 4/4 for the rest of the piece. I restate the melody for the head out in a pretty skeleton form, working again towards the melody at mm20.
So lots of line cliché ideas, which follows ed’s compositional style here, also octave displacement of the melody etc
I didn’t make it to church today – instead I worked on this and posted it – so I think I get special dispensation : )

Hi Steve,
How are you?
I really enjoyed that. It created a nice reflective mood which is what I wanted the composition to emote. Thanks for taking on the tune and giving us your take on it. I'm sure you put a lot of thought into it. I also liked the sound of the vibes. Very round and full which is a big plus in playing this type of tune. I dig the laid back tempo. Some nice rubato things going on at certain cadence points which makes it more dramatic. Keith Jarrett is a master at that. Talking about Keith, everyone should check out Keith's recording The Melody at Night, With You. It's one of my favorite recordings. It's a solo recording that he recorded it at his home after he was recuperating from his illness. He originally set out to record it as a present to his wife but ECM ended up putting it out. There's a gorgeous version of "Shendandoah" on there as well as so many other beautiful renditions of classic tunes. It would be a great example for all vibists to check out.
So Steve, although you missed church yesterday, you did a very good thing. Bless you son.

Hi Tony,
Yes. that's the same tune at you did before. I think you'll really like Jarrett's changes. His rendition is beautiful. I know you'll enjoy the whole recording.
