i don't have anything good for recording myself, so i'm looking for something with good audio recrding. i'm thinking probably just audio, some sort of portable recorder. but if there's anything that has video too i wouldn't be opposed to it. something around $100-$200 or so is what i was thinking. thanks for any info on this!

This is be a great investment! Don't worry about video. The audio is most important.

I have a zoom. Here are two models

http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Handy-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B001QWBM6…

They're both great for recording yourself. I money is a problem then get the cheap one. If you can get the H4n then get that one. It has a lot of really cool features I don't think the other one has. The H4n can be used as an interface for software on your computer.

But you know what, either of them will change your musical life! You're record and listen back and learn a ton. You will be glad when you have an audio recorder. Forget the video for now. The audio is the way to go. Video takes too much time, to get into the computer and prepare and then convert to post, etc.

I have a Zoom H2 and I'm truly happy with it. Very intuitive, easy to use, versatile, good quality recording, great portability.

Surely the H4 is better. But the budget is closer from yours with H2 and fine.

Just take care of it as it's more fragile than it's big bro.

Good luck, and Keep us posted!

PS: As a matter of fact, if you want to hear it at work, and then nicely "drop" on my living room table with the "help" of my son, you can check out his performance at the end of this tune (don't worry, no one was "armed"): http://www.vibesworkshop.com/node/4150/ ;-)

Yes sound from H2, at least when my son and I are singing. You know that we all recorded our parts home, and Tarik mixed them afterwards. I'm not sure which recorder he owns, but I guess he would tell you the same.

We had sooo much fun that day for Tony's 50th! You missed something! BTW, you can check all of the 28 tunes posted for him (and more)... there : http://www.vibesworkshop.com/book/tonys-50th-birthday-all-posts-relatio…

Keep us posted,

That's what I was thinking today while improvising.

I have that a lot. I just play around, and bump into something I like. So I search and work a bit, but it's always to complex to quickly record. I need something at my side, so I can quickly press record.

And what do you know, there is a thread for it here.

I really love this site.

Thanks for the tips, I'll look into it.

i have all that digital recording stuff like zoomh4 and a 24 channel alesis hd24. but if it comes to just quickly record something you practice and listening back i use this old tape recorder and i swear you nothing is faster to record on and easy to use. and it´s also cheap i paid 6€ for it.

if you try to find a specefic passage on a h4 of a 10 minute recording you have to go into the menue with this small buttons and rewind is slow as hell on that things and there is no cue listening. the handling of that old tape recorders is much more easy and faster. mine has even the ability to plug in my mixing consol and record with my studio mics in mono (!) if i like to.

i use this old tape recorder really every day and i have 10 cassettes in use which i delete if i´m sure there´s nothing on it i want to keep.

i´m not a real purist but really sometimes that old stuff is much more functional than all the new digital hi-end stuff.

6€ and i use it since months now really everyday over many hours...think about it :)
