Deep Hearts (Ed Saindon) by James Peipon Quartet

This is from a recent concert my group and I played at Berklee. This is Ed's tune, Deep Hearts, which is one of my favorite of Ed's tunes.

Thanks a lot, Tony... it means a lot. But... I think this is more a case of the chart making me look better... not to mention the rest of the band. :)

It's just a great chart.. it has a lot of natural 'drama' and 'build' in the harmony as well as some meter changes that give it some contrast and something that make your ears perk up.

yep it's a great chart, but i've been listening and judging players for a long time. i get the feeling you're very talented and just by what you do and say on the site i think a lot of you.

and in this piece it's obvious that you are a very sensitive musician, so take the kudos.

i also know you have one of the best teachers around. so yeah man!

Hi James, Nice playing from you and the group. It's all there. Sensitivity, dynamics, pacing, listening, the use of motives in the improv... The mallet sound was nice and fat with good clarity. (Not that I'm biased or anything about that. Ha!Ha!). Also, good use of all four mallets. The fulcrum grip seems to be getting more and more natural and ingrained in your playing.

Thanks again, everyone, for the encouragement. It's not every day that you have Berklee faculty dropping in to listen to your recital but I was very happy to have Gustavo in attendance.

It is a young group and I'm glad to have had the pleasure of their company for this recital... I'm the old man of the group at 24. I wanted to treat them to a beer after the concert to say thanks for playing with me... but the bassist and drummer are still under 21!

I play at a few bars and everyone else is 21 or over except me (I'm 19). It's always funny to be around there but the people usually don't even know how old I am. I order my usual Dr. Pepper on the rocks at one of the bars in particular.

Really nice playing. I really enjoyed it. It reminds me a lot of the tunes on Gary Burton's Next Generation album

I'm going to attempt to get into Berklee for 2011 as a transfer student, even though I hear that they wont take any of my credits (I'm cool with that, I'm willing to start over).
Seems like the place to be.
