Here is my attempt at stride vibes.
I recently heard a great version of Moonglow on the radio, with Gary Burton and clarinetist, Eddie Daniels. http://www.amazon.com/Moonglow/dp/B000WM0PLA
This inspired me to learn it. Then Tony's Stride Vibes lesson was brought up again recently and I thought this would be a perfect tune to try and do stride.

Ringing

In reply to yo barry by tonymiceli
I knew someone was going to say something about ringing :-(. If I didn't have the tremolo on, I would have let it ring less. I wanted to emphasize the tremolo with sustain, but it was bit too much.
Thanks for posting you version. I'll study it some more.

Tony Miceli!! This is the rudest stick drop I ever heard! How can you?! This is chocking!
We're listening, it's cool... and suddenly, with no warning...
How dare you?!

Barry,
Last time I said your playing had hugely improved, you told me the bass and drum had surely helped thinking about it. But where are they here? I still can hear a very different Barry than last year… even as soloist! ;o)
As for the ringing, in fact it mainly drawn my attention in the intro, but not that much in the rest of the tune (MHO).
Last but not least: the stick drop… Hmm… I know you're quite still a novice in the discipline… May I suggest you to concentrate a bit of you time on that important part of the tune: maybe it had a little lack of… let's say… "consistency"...? (just a friendly advice as ususal)
Cool interpretation anyway! ;o)

Good ears

MN,
You have really good ears. I didn't even realize I dropped my sticks until I heard the recording back. You were able to hear that I wasn't concentrating on that part. I was just relieved to get through the tune.
As for not having drums, I did have a sort of a metronome going. I was trying to play along with the tremolo tempo. It's funny that, as the motor warms up, it speeds up. I can't get it slow how I want it (but that's no excuse for my bad sense of rhythm). I need to figure out how to get a digital servo motor on it.
Thanks!

Flutter Pedal

In reply to more judicious flutter by steve yeager
Thanks for the advice, Steve. Here is a new version with flutter pedaling. My pedal is so noisy. I tried oiling some parts, but it's still noisy. I think that is the reason I never really tried playing with flutter pedaling.
I tried several takes playing with a slower tempo, but by the end, I always sped it up. Do you think mouth noises would help me? Tony, can you give us a lesson on that? ;-)
You might want to lower your volume, there is a harsh stick drop at the end. I was going for the kind that Randy did recently on his stride Giant Steps recording (his stick drop timing was absolutely perfect). I think it mine had a nice full sound, but may not have been appropriate for this tune. In some other takes tonight, I had some drops were at the other end of the spectrum; a bit too whimpy. Still trying to find the right balance.

Barry, I am very impressed with that version !
I listened your first version, then tony's comping, then your flutterpedal version.
about the flutter version :
did you use only the left to stride comp, or do you add the right interior sometimes ?
I'd really like to see a video of you playinig that.
That sounds like a major step forward...Wow...

Hey Tifoo!
Those two versions are great!
Barry -> great job on the video and getting tifoo to do this.
Tifoo -> So you transcribed barry's thing and played it too. This is the Sh%T!!
I must say that I dig the slower version more. It just doesn't have that old school stride feeling when you go to fast. Just my thoughts... what do you think? I do think it's good that you did it fast also and you're playing it great!
And what I loved is the octave rolls in your right hand, that sounded good!
Keep it up guys!

Yo, Tifoo!
I'm flattered that you transcribed my arrangement, and made it your own. Both of your videos sounded great. Feel free to post the transcription, with the changes I suggested.
I am still working on it. I am thinking of adding a little more harmonic movement in the stride, rather than just repeating double-stops.

Measure 8 looks like it was transcribed incorrectly. That Cm6 should be an Am7, voiced as A C E G, followed by chromatic ascending thirds.

hey tifoo,
i liked the 2nd version most of it.you got an incredible indepandance e.g the shake in the right hand while playing quarters in the right....i used to practice that a lot.the whole thing sounds great BUT i told you earlier on some other video:
please, ask your plate throwing wife if it´s possible to get the budget for some nice microphones.i mean the sound from the cam is not bad but it would be so much better with some good overhead microphones...i always think that if i hear your videos...which i totally dig.this would make them perfect for me :) just some 200€ would do the job i think!

Thanks for your comment Tarik,
about microphone : I don't have a good soundcard, so that might be difficult to record properly, even with good mics...and the real problem is that the room is also use by childrens and family sometimes, so I can't do a proper set-up (and I don't want to go back in my basement....please !!)
Will you join in for a Barry-stride version ?
children´s are no problem

then you should go for an extra budget and get a zoom h4 or h2 as a recording device...about 200€ so we can hear your family in a better sound quality :)
i would recommend it to you...think it over!
i´m busy with TJ´s tune of the week and "after you´ve gone" at the moment but let´s see if i got the time i will do it.

Philippe Fri, 11/11/2011 - 06:09
Hi Barry, This is my version of your Moonglow arrangement. I've taken a few liberties with it(in the bridge, and in the last A section), by including things that I began to hear while I was working on it. The execution is far from perfect, as I'm a novice with 4 mallets . But precisely, this Moonglow will be a starting point for me. I'm studying Tony's lessons really hard, learning to read music out of a book while playing(the Solo Vibist vol.1, by Thomas A. Brown, is an excellent book for beginners), in other words, doing all the things I should have done in the very beginning. I'll keep on working on Moonglow. I'm not ready to do a solo yet. That will come later, I hope. Cheers for now.

Yes Marie, I used a metronome (I had it in my earphones). I'm still new to this style of playing and I couldn't help rushing it. I'm afraid I'll keep on using the metronome until I get good enough to dispense with it. I'm going to be very busy for many months to come, you know. I've got some books, I'm learning to read music, doing basic exercises, studying Tony's lessons on stride vibes etc... It's a lot of work !

Man I'd need it too!! And I think it's a good thing to use it. And... if you feel you need it, at least it means you're aware of it! ;-) I did the same (click in my ear) when recording my first stride attempt recently. At the beginning, even with the metronome I would rush like hell! haha! Ok let's keep it up: Metronome rocks! :o)

Salut Babu, I'm really through with Band in a Box. I have in mind to really apply myself and get that "stride" style off the ground. It will mean several months' hard work, I'm sure. But this is what keep you young. I want to listen to Thelonius Monk's stride (Just a Gigolo etc.) and see if I can get something out of that. Also Dave Mc Kenna, a great "modern stride" player. I have received David Friedman's book, but I'm studying something more basic to begin with. I have everything to learn. See you ! Philippe

great job barry!
did you mess around with the pedal? like putting it up and down on every beat?? are you doing that? sometimes it sounds like it. then maybe make some more space in between the notes. what do you think.
anyway, that sounded good and even my wife who was upstairs said, 'what tune is that that your playing'?

I should work it up again. I think in addition to flutter pedal, I should try dead stroking the LH double-stops. AND, I should use a metronome.
