AS you probably know, i have an antique ludwig and luwdig vibraphone. The dampener bar is about 2 inches deep and creates a lot of noise when pulled down. We think it may be the springs, but are not sure. There is 2 springs, one on each side. Is there anything else that will quite the dampener? We tried putting pieces of felt underneath and above the bar. That did nothing. We are going to try some oil. Will changing the springs reduce the squeaks? They are original and are 60 something years old. Maybe they are rusty.

Couple of causes:
1. the points where the pivot arms stick into are dried out. WD40 here does wonders
2. the pivot-point of the pedal is dried out, WD40 here does wonders
3. put some grease on the springs. Might help
4. put some grease on the eye underneath the damperbar in which the pedalconnector hooks in.

The instrument can transmit the sounds from one place to another making it difficult to find where the problem really is originating. Try using a $10.00 stethoscope and move it around the instrument until you find the exact spot where the squeeks originate -(just like a doctor and patient). Sometimes it's where the wood meets wood in the joints where the rails meet the end pieces.

rcently, we replaced the felt. we sanded it down, which has semmed to remove the squeaks. But we only sanded the dampener. it worked
