Hi All-
I'm typing one-handed to ask for everyone's advice on and experiences with tendonitis, repetitive stress, carpal tunnel, etc. I want to for my own situation, but also because I think any site that offers so many compelling and difficult things to practice should probably also offer some info on how to keep one's wrists from falling off!
As requested by Anthony, here's my version of Black Nile. This would be an interesting tune for us all to study. You know it's said to be a modern tune and it is and a really fun one to play, however when you check out the harmony it's just a standard. D- to A for the A sections and then 3, 6, 2, 5, in the key of Eb for the bridge. It has more complex changes for the bridge but look at them and you'll see what I mean.
I was checking vicfirth.com, and I saw that podcast....I was amazed by the timing of this duet "Meehan/Perkins Duo"!
Of course you can notice the phasing process resolving on another note of a sequence was done already in S.Reich's Drumming and Piano Phase...
here are the direct links to the video :
Gary plays Red Norvo's Dance of the Octopus. Wait till you hear this!
Yes yet another version. We videoed this for some promo we're doing. Great players so I thought I'd post it.
Diane Monroe - Violin
Tony Miceli - Vibes
Tony Marino - Bass
Todd Isler - Percussion
Since Gary has been posting about Red, I thought I'd add this podcast. It was done by National Public Radio and they have about fifty other similar podcasts about jazz artists available for free download from their website (www.npr.org). Just search for the program called Jazz Profiles. They're very informative and are a fun listen.
Hope you enjoy.
James
A wonderful article by Gary Burton all about Red Norvo - Tony Miceli
