Teddy Charles - Captain Vibist!
Teddy Charles
Hi all,
In his last post, Gary Burton talked about Teddy Charles. I thought it was a good opportunity to go ahead on our little tour of great vibists lives.
In a former post, we had talked about how many vibists had long lives. At 80, Teddy Charles is surely a very good example!

Bud Powell by Gary Burton & Chick Corea (1980)
I was watching this video and thinking about ALL the different types of sets Gary has played on. I'm sure he wouldn't carry his everywhere.
I was wondering what he had to go up against sometimes?
I know our school lent him a Musser that wasn't in great shape. the legs were bent in and bending. It would have worked fine but might have looked a bit odd on stage!

Sword of Whispers - BarryK's Take 2
I am still working on Sword of Whispers. I am internalizing it a bit more but my timing and hand independence could use some work. I was trying to keep a pulse in the left hand, using the rhythm of Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind", which is syncopated like Joe's gentle intro in the lead sheet.

Milt Jackson - Bag's Groove
Hey someone sent me this link:

It's kind of handy even though they left Bobby of the Vibes list :o)!
Anyway, I clicked on Milt and this was the first vid that came up. Maybe you have already seen it?

It Might As Well Be Spring by John Mark Piper
I hadn't posted anything in a long while and so I went digging. Here's a recording I did in 2006 of "It Might As Well Be Spring". Tony and Ed also did a version of this and it hasn't been posted here yet so I thought with the season changing, this would be a good one to post. You have to be patient because it's another one with a long intro. My objective to these long intros is to have fun with it and create an ambience that would make the vibe sound bigger when it actually comes in with the arrangement.
