Pedal on every chord.
This will teach you about chord melodies.
The pedal for the most part can be down for two beats at a time for most of the tune. However there are a couple spots where the chords change on beats 3 and 4. Use a lead sheet and your ears to figure out where they are.
Study the original harmony and see where I add upper partials not in the lead sheet.
Even if the harmony is too complex this also for beginners, just work on the music, don't worry about the advanced chords. Just play it as is.
I would love to see a beginning post their version of this!
Download the PDF. Learn 1 chorus. Once you can play it, then next add the chords and figure out all the upper partials I'm using.
A new song I just finished composing titled "Cinematic Scene". I'm using a new set of my signature mallets (Vic Firth M39) that just arrived in the mail. Very happy how these mallets sound in terms of fullness, color and clarity. The lead sheet can be viewed and downloaded via Google Docs: Here's the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_earYPvM3TsS0DU5OmqsFe5UcSDYSKxh/view
I am working on an arrangement to Genesis' tune "Follow You Follow Me".
Here is my best take of the night's practice; messed up the solo section :-(, but I like the rest of it. In the intro and chorus, listen for the repeated notes in the accompaniment. I play the melody with mallet 4, then repeated notes with mallet 2 then 3. I interleave a bass note with mallet 1. I attached a separate demo. I am also trying to keep the accompaniment lower volume than melody.
Suggestions appreciated.
Enjoy,
Barry

I just thought I'd post a video of me as I was messing around with the chords.
I don't think this is the one I already posted is it?
You guys should post some stuff. It's a great way to get better. As you're going to try your hardest, as if you have a performance. Don't underestimate the power of the POST!
I'm doing some recording this week with a bass player. We spent a whole session last week putting together and recording this arrangement of "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me". As much fun as improvising is, I love putting little arrangements like this together. I'll add the notes once I get a chance to write it out.
