What do you guys think of this CD? Like it? Hate it? In the middle?
Not a typical jazz cd as many of us know them. I listened to a lot of ECM records back in the day. I have not listened to a lot them in recent years. When I heard this CD I missed listening to them, mainly because they are no straight ahead, or typical jazz CDs. Maybe they are typical for some of us. I own a lot of ECM records.
I have learned to use I statements when I talk about opinions! So...
I really love this CD. I love CDs without drummers and/or bass players as much as I love CDs with drummers and bass players. It's so interesting to see the roles change in the group. Everyone has more responsibility! I think the music is beautiful and the improvisation is the same. I love Art Lande's playing and super super love Paul McCandless' playing. I'm an Oregon fan. (Check them out if you don't know about them)
I love Dave Samuels comping in the tune Skylight when it's him and Paul McCandless.
I think they all really listen and play well together. A lot of times for me if there is a piano, that means I'm a horn player. No chords. Many times the pianos won't give me room to comps. I don't really care, I just shift modes and have a little more free time! :-)
So I'm curious to see what you guys think.

Labels, labels, labels...

First and foremost, I think this is an album of tremendously beautiful music.
It didn't do super well as a commercial venture because it was genre bending. Being on ECM, it was labeled as "jazz" and, given that it had a lot of improvisation, that seemed to fit as well as any other genre label might have. But, it really had elements of European art music, in particular the sort of stuff associated with Steve Reich and other minimalist composers in the mid-late 20th century tradition. It also lacked some elements that are traditionally considered fundamental in jazz, like the pocket groove (the groove here, which is totally compelling, is more like something you might hear from a performance of Stravinsky or even Bartok)... But who cares??? I don't. It's beautiful, touching, and superbly well performed in my opinion.
But lots of people do care... again, in my opinion, that is their loss. Labels do help market music but they say nothing about how good it is and often create a bubble outside of which the music will not be heard and enjoyed. I think we could all do with more great music like this and fewer labels on all the music we listen to.
I actually thought of you…

I actually thought of you when I was posting this. I know you know all this music!
It is great stuff and a bit of a rebellion from traditional jazz. It's all good right? Conform, Rebell, just make great music!
The Burton Keith Jarret album is on ECM right?
Is some or all of the Burton, Corea on there?
