要聽到大調major和Dorian音階的差別,重點就在,一定要建立在同一個根音上,才聽得出來音階色彩的差別。

Pivot Chords

Pivot Chords are a great way to work on key stuff. I got the idea from Bill Evans. I liked the way he modulated different tunes and tried to make my own up. Here's how he changes key at the end of Here's that Rainy Day.

So Instead of going to G he puts what I call a pivot chord and modulates to Eb. I think of this as the Anti-Mack-The-Knife modulation. It fits with the melody and moves you to a new key seamlessly.

Afro Cuban Vibes 2 - Part 1

I have had some requests since the last lesson to show how to apply the ideas from lesson 1 to different chord sequences. This part of the lesson deals exclusively with taking a single rhythm (the first from lesson 1) and applying it over various tunes with different voicings. Watching it again, I feel like I played these patterns a lit bit on the fast side for cha cha so slow them down ;)

Techniques for Mastering Solo Playing Lesson Plan

This is a series of ideas, ways and techniques for you to consider when playing solo.

This is really open to other faculty and other pro players on the site. I'd love to get something from some of these other amazing players and put together a comprehensive series on solo playing!!!

Under ALL LESSONS are some examples of people playing solo. (If I've missed anything please let me know).

Then there are lessons specific to each players level.

What instruments does this pertain to?

TOTM - Autumn Leaves - A few inspiring versions

Our next TOTM is Autumn Leaves. Here is one of my favorite versions. Do you know who Eva Cassidy is? Man check her out, she is pretty heavy. More of a blues singer, but wow, she gives me chills. She died very young and in her prime. I'm a huge Eva Cassidy fan and this is my most favorite versions of Autumn Leaves.

We won't use this to study, but I just figured I'd post it.

POST YOUR FAVORITE VERSIONS OF AUTUMN LEAVES IN THE COMMENTS. WE WILL BUILD A HUGE JUKE BOX OF AUTUMN LEAVES!

Check out the versions below. All the interpretations. Man!!!

Quick Donna Lee Etude Video

I'm at school right now and I had a few minutes with the camera on. So I thought I'd play a very rough and quick version of Donna Lee, the etude I have posted here.

I think if anything the etude will lead to you thinking about using double stops in your lines to get the chords happening.

I also have a version over Bud Powell's Celia that I'll post soon.

I do spend a lot of time playing solos 'in slow motion' and seeing where I can add things in. That's what is fun about this instrument, it can be sort of like a puzzle.
