Wow does this take me back. I used to play this tune in my group appearing at the Comeback Inn in Venice, Calif. with a piano player, John Beasley, who now has grown and progressed into a Musical Director at every other big event on the West Coast and other places. But we were a 2 mallet version. And that was back when I was fast and good and young.
The Burton/Corea-duo has been "founded" at the Olympic Games in 1972 (read the story about it in Garys biography!). Thanks the persistance of Manfred Eicher (from the ECM record company) it happened at all, although both - Chick & Gary - didn't cherish great expectations about the success of this project. Today - 40 years later - this duo is an integral part of the international jazz scene. (Remember, this performance must be from the very first tour of their collaboration.) Unbelievable what would have been lost to the (musical) world if Manfred Eicher would not have been that purposeful...
