Gary sent me this lesson to post on the site. It's a great lesson on solo playing. (I think part 2 is on the way)
I think it's really incredible that he is taking the time to do this for us! - Tony Miceli
The part that's really sticking with me after a day of thinking about this lesson is how the audience "hears" the melody and accompaniment. This is what I like to call the "third ear" that's out in the audience somewhere, and perhaps on piano it's a little easier since that instrument is more spread out. But the point about keeping the volume a little higher on the melody is well-taken since it's true that the audience's ear is drawn first to the melody.
The analogy of the melody line to Sarah Vaughan is really interesting, since one doesn't normally think of playing a mallet instrument line in her style. But it makes perfect sense, and if I never really heard that connection before - I sure do now.
This lesson alone is worth the months of subscription I've already paid. When Gary played at my university you could hear a pin drop, and everyone was literally on the edge of their seats. The guy is a frickin Jedi, and yet I'm 'hanging out' with him here!!!
