Just wanted to appreciate the deep lesson in right hand development here....I know G has talked about this in his videos...and i have no idea why he goes down to three mallets here BUT. Can you dig how he plays with one hand? Gary's right hand and everything it implies in terms of phrasing, accents, (what it frees the left to do) all of it is super deep. I am so grateful for youtube....
Ah, the shift to three mallets. I can tell you why I dropped the mallet: on rare occasions, at least back in my youth, I would develop a blister on my right hand index finger, you know what I mean. And, in order to adjust to that impairment, I would drop the extra mallet on faster, louder tunes. I haven't looked at the entire taping of this concert, so I don't know if there are other examples of three mallet playing or not. I was 23 years old at that time, and already had been playing exclusively with four mallets for 4-5 years I would guess. I did enjoy listening to this and seeing it. Gosh, we all look so young, and the playing seems so locked in and confident. By that time, the band had been playing steadily for over two years, so we were pretty tight. I must say, though, I have no memory of playing Scrapple From The Apple with Stan's band, but obviously we did, and I'm sure it wasn't a one-time thing, especially for a BBC television production. Stan and roy and Steve sure sound good. - Gary
Wow! Stan plays most of the Charlie Parker bridge on the head. I've been working on that myself. And Gary drops one of his right hand sticks for his solo. Interesting, never seen him do that before.
Wow - Gary is so unbelievable outstanding (just at the age of 23).
What Art Tatum is for the piano he will be definitely for the vibes: Outstanding for decades...!
I am absolutely sure!

And seeing Steve Swallow play (anything) upright is such a thrill. I love his sound on upright. This group is stellar.

I like the little half step modulation on the second "A" section of the head(wonder if that was spontaneous;it appears that Gary caught it mid-stream)

took the time to check out the head on the way out and they play the half step bit again so looks like it was part of the arrangement;nice!
and it's part of the blowing!
