Tony and I discussed our new TOTMs. They will be "Giant Steps" and "There Will Never Be Another You." For Giant Steps, we'll discuss the various different treatments of the tune. If Giant Steps is a little too difficult, follow the lessons for There Will Never Be Another You.

Both these tunes are great, so do both if you can! Keep on the lookout for new lessons.

Since last spring I have been thinking a lot about the melodic contour in improvisation. Today I wanted to share some thoughts and systems on how to understand the ways phrases can be built using Cell Shapes (ideas that are created using small contour segments, c-segs for short).

This is the first bridge of Green Dolphin Street or the B1 I guess you'd call it.

Put the chords in, then play or listen to the tune, then memorize this 'shortude'. Put it through some keys!

Check it out this video where I accompanied one of my students during a lecture to promote in Spain the “IV Workshop de Improvisación e Vibráfono” and the “European Vibraphone-Festival & Workshop 2016". When one my students (called Sergio, 14 years old) watched the duet of David Frideman and Tony Miceli playing "Samba de Orfeo" and he did not stop to ask me if he could prepare, so, this is part of the performance recorded by the audience.
