Transcribing via Evolution of Jazz

Several years ago 1980's, I did a lot of transcribing. I found a great way was to start in the beginning of the Jazz Era and work your way up. We had a great library in Pasadena, CA and I checked out a bunch of early jazz from around early 1900s starting with "Cylinder Jazz" (before vinyl recording were done on wire and cylinder) and started transcribing melodies that were descendants of slaves' field chants.

Mozart to Coltrane's Giant Steps Part 4

PART 4

Academic but still might be interesting to anyone studying Giant Steps.

Doc Chittum is a very loved faculty member at Uarts. He does a lecture each year where he ties Giant Steps all the way back to Mozart. The lecture is pretty amazing. This is a 4 part excerpt from the lecture. In the lecture he hands out music and shows this lineage that's really incredible!

Quick Lick #2

Here's another lick for January. It's in 2 parts. The lick is attached to each part as a pdf and I play it. I would advise transcribing the lick yourself first and then checking the music.

I usually don't even put the music up but this lick is a little more involved.

What instruments does this pertain to?

Chinese translation for Chinese students
有幾個方式去學調式音階,
第一種你可以想成都在C大調音階的關係(全部沒有升降記號):
C音到C音Ionian,
D音到D音Dorian,
E音到E音Phrygian,
F音到F音Lydian,
G音到G音Mixolydian,
A音到A音Aeolian,
B音到B音Locian,
