TOTM - All The Things You Are - 4 Interpretations of the Melody

Hey all,

Not really an official lesson here, but thought I'd post a version of our TOTM where I just play the melody through a few times. With each version, I try to do different things with the phrasing, leaning back, forward, decorating notes, etc. I'm playing along with a crappy i Real Pro thing, but it should give an idea of how you can mess with phrasing. It would be nice to see some other posts here with your versions! Have fun with it!

Practicing improv with Pentatonic scales on Green Dolphin Street -V

Practicing improv (using Pentatonic scales) on Green Dolphin Street today before a class at Berklee. It's good to play on piano in order to hear how the scales and colors sound over the chord. Favorite pianists that use Pentatonics so well include Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Mulgrew Miller, Joey Calderazzo, Kenny Kirkland and Dave Kikoski. When I get a chance, I'll post a sheet on googledocs that lists which Pentatonics I'm using for the changes. Ed

M55 Stablizer Solution

The vintage Musser M-55 is a superb vibraphone. I own both a 1978 M55 that I purchased new and also a 1960s vintage M-75. Both are excellent instruments, but they each have their own personalities. The M-75 has a slightly darker and silkier sound. The M55 is brighter, projects more strongly, and sustains the sound longer. The M-75 frame is very solid and stable, but because of all of the parts and pieces, moving the M-75 is difficult. My M-75 lives in my studio and my trusty M-55 is my gigging instrument.

Bobby Hutcherson solo transcription from "Enjoy the View"

Hi Everyone,

Here's a real study in simplicity. This is from Hutcherson's latest album on Blue Note with Joey DeFrancesco, David Sanborn, and Billy Hart. The tune is a blues by Joey titled "Don Is". I believe the album is on Spotify, but I encourage everyone to buy it! It's really great to hear Bobby still playing after all these years.
